Good day gents, and ladies too, since no image is provided by Amazon, here is my own:
I suppose you are wondering why I’m suggesting you read the Detroit Police Department’s manual for their Mayor’s personal body guarding unit, since none of us will ever become professional bodyguards. Of course, if you are interested in becoming a bodyguard, this is the place to start.
Quite a number of years ago, I inherited a bad scenario that came as baggage with a new girl friend. It was worth it since she became my wife and has given me the best years of my life. But back then I found I had to expand my self defence ideas to include other people and other places such as her home and our cars. It was my search for how to make sport karate into a real self defence system that brought me to Marc MacYoung, Peyton Quinn, Loren Christensen et al. And the fun has never stopped!
I no more had the luxury of looking out for only myself. As the back cover of the book says:
“Bodyguarding is a how-to-do-it manual that covers every aspect of protecting the life of a client.”
So, true to my let’s do it right attitude, I got the manual and read it. Immediately I had a much greater understanding of the scope of my strengths and weaknesses. I learned about threat assessment, how to avoid confrontations, how to stay safe in crowds, security systems and hard targeting my house.
A lot of the information that was suitable for the professional had to be modified so suit my life but that was fairly easy to do. The last chapter is, in fact, How to Bodyguard Yourself. It goes over things like:
• the need for family rehearsals just like fire drills so everyone knows where to go and their job
• surveying your home with the eyes of an intruder
• all about “safe rooms”
• early warning tactics, including dogs
• hardening your house as a target by use of lighting and sensors etc. which allow you to stay in shadows but expose the intruder
• and when not to use your flashlight for the surprise effect from a concealed position.
and, as they say, so much more, including an in depth discussion about weapons. I found it to be very entertaining and each chapter ends with a full bibliography of resources. By learning how the professional’s think, your own thinking will be greatly expanded and, if need be, your safety greatly enhanced.
