Defendu, written by Fairbairn for the police forces of the Far East, was the base for this revision expanded for civilians.
But I must take exception to this: much of the content is useful only to police who must restrain and arrest a person. Seldom will ordinary folks have to do this although the knowledge in this book would come in very handy if we did.
Douglas Fairbanks, actor and sportsman, wrote in the preface, 1931:
“After a long experience of methods of attack and defence, I am convinced that no methods that I have seen put into book form meet the requirements of the average man and present-day conditions.”
Stripped of all its martial artsy roots, these methods became the mainstay of the armed forces on three continents, and police everywhere. They are simple and easy to use to get maximum effect and can be learned very quickly.
Even with all the modern advice on personal safety and the big surge in martial arts applications, this amazing 165 page book is still a main influence with those whose career involves physically managing violent people.
Chapter 1: Defences against various Holds
Thirteen different situations studied including bear hugs and having your hair grabbed as happens to so many ladies.
Chapter 2: Dealing with an Armed Assailant
Has this military chapter come full circle? Six pistol disarms and one rifle disarm are clearly explained with full pictures. It would be a very good idea to find a teacher of these cqc methods before you trust your life on your practise.

Wrist throws, hip throws, instep throw- -so many throws, so little opportunity!
Chapter 5: Use of Baton, “Nightstick” and Club
How to hit, how to block, come-along holds, locks and chokes are just part of the methods in this chapter.
Chapter 6: How to Use a Walking Stick
includes strangles, holds and throws with our stick.
Chapter 7: How to Make and Effective Knot
In case you want to take prisoners, knots are very useful. Probably more detail than you will ever need to know.
Chapter 8: Miscellaneous Advice

assailant safely. Etc, etc.
This book is a must buy if you need easy but effective self defense.
