![]() | Surviving Armed Assaults: A Martial Artists Guide to Weapons, Street Violence, and Countervailing Force author: Lawrence A. Kane rating: ![]() asin: 1594390711 binding: Paperback list price: $24.95 USD amazon price: $16.47 USD |
At over 300 (large format) pages, this tour de force is destined to rise to the top of everyone’s list of: what to buy for a martial artist.

I can’t help but wonder how long it took Lawrence Kane to finish this incredible project. His research is detailed yet wide in scope. His breadth of knowledge is astounding yet he presents it all in very readable way, filling the content with personal stories and anecdotes as well as real life criminal cases.

Even though it is obviously written for martial artists, non–students of the martial arts will benefit greatly from a good read of the book. I suggest you read it through once, in full, then go back and study those parts that are most applicable to your life and situation. It is just too much info to try to carry everything in your head all the time.
Amazon Book Description
"This groundbreaking book teaches essential survival skills that can keep you safe on the street, covering awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, countervailing force, armed conflict, aftermath of violence, and weapon features/functions. A variety of scenarios help readers internalize this knowledge. Experienced martial artists, street-savvy professionals, and everyone in-between can benefit from this information."

Not being content to just remind us that awareness, avoidance and de-escalation are useful during potential social meltdowns, Lawrence provides a list to of practical do’s and don’t s that focus our attention upon our choices when we might be overwhelmed as to what we should do next. What should we be aware of and what should we avoid are fully answered. De–escalation techniques are explored in detail, encompassing what to say, how to say it and how to present your body language while saying it.
He includes:
- how to deal with a weapon attack, covering a multitude of weapons
- how to manage any injuries you may have sustained during the attack
- how to talk to the police and the lawyer after the attack, including creating witnesses
- his Nine Rules to Live By
- Detective (ret) J. J. Bittenbinder’s four principles for personal safety; (1) make yourself a hard target, (2) deny privacy, (3) attract attention and (4) take appropriate action, are discussed in detail.
- There is also a very interesting discussion about when it is advisable for you to run away from a criminal with a gun and whether straight away is better than a zig zag, but I won’t give that away here. Yet…
I am very impressed with this book and don’t hesitate to recommend it to you all.
